Aims

Critically develop an understanding of the contending concepts of Right and Human Rights and critically assess the concept of the universality of Human Rights. Evaluate and critique various international conventions on protection of rights, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Examine violations of rights in the light of various social and political contexts across the world.

Critically apply concepts of Human Rights to specific cases, especially to the legal debates relating to counter-terrorism

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:• Historical look at the evolution of the concepts of Right in various parts of the world • Introduction to the philosophies and theories of Right and Human Rights • Relevance of theories of Right and Human Rights to contemporary social conflicts and contexts • Relevance and application of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international conventions • Case studies: • Torture, old and new • Women rights • Child rights • Modern Slavery • Migrant workers’ rights • Rights of privacy • Civil rights and protest movements • Violations of rights in conflict and war zones
Additional Information:The module will be assessed by two essays. The first essay will require the student to outline an aspect of human rights law in which the student is interested in. The second essay will be a case study where the student applies human rights law to an issue of concern such as torture or detention without trial.
