Aims

This module aims to provide students with a philosophical understanding of how the concept of policing has been constructed. It also aims to consider the role of the police and their role in society, from the viewpoint of both police practitioner and the public. The module aims to explore the different paradigms of policing: high and low policing; community policing and intelligence-led policing. It aims to explore key contemporary debates within policing such as police legitimisation, accountability, representation and independence as well as some key issues of controversy, such as: undercover policing; police corruption; police complaints and culture.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:The history of the British policing module. The role of police in society. The different paradigms of policing. The different approaches to police accountability. Current problems of UK police in meeting public expectations and legitimacy. Key contemporary policing issues.
Additional Information:This module provides an introduction to policing and explores the different ways the police are contextualised in different societies over time. It also provides students with an account of the key paradigms of policing and offers a critique of them. Finally, recent controversies within British policing are explored and put into the wider international context.
