Aims

To provide students with a comprehensive introduction to the theory and practice of urban design. To engage in the comprehensive appraisal and analysis of urban design precedents, and utilise these to inform the theoretical basis of a design project. To provide historical and theoretical knowledge along with a range of technical skills to enable the analysis, generation and communication of urban design projects at a variety of scales. To place urban design in a social, political and economic context with an understanding of environmental sustainability issues.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Evaluate and synthesise various theoretical positions in urban design.
2.
Critically evaluate urban design projects through use of diagrams, images and written documentation.
3.
Synthesise knowledge of the social, political and economic context and appropriate theoretical concepts of urban design into design project work.
4.
Investigate, evaluate and integrate urban design strategies into a design project.
5.
Investigate, evaluate and integrate environmental strategies into a design project.
6.
Create an appropriate wide range of visual communication material.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:A series of lectures and seminars explore issues affecting the form of cities and the design of urban environments. The lectures cover historical and contemporary examples and precedents, exploring best practice and approaches to urban design. Concurrently, from the outset of the module there is a series of analytical and creative tasks, supported through tutorials and seminars in the form of design reviews. Collectively, these tasks lead into the group urban design project, which is also supported by tutorials and seminars in the form of design reviews, proposing the creative regeneration of an urban area. Individual urban design project work emanates from the group proposals, facilitating more detailed consideration of strategic design proposals. Presentation of both group and individual proposals requires refined visual communication, such that the whole module effectively delivers an entire urban design process of research, analysis, theoretical positioning, design and communication.
Module Overview:
The module commences with a series of urban design lectures that manifest in a design theory essay. Concurrently, analytical studies and creative tasks lead into the group urban design project, proposing the regeneration of an urban area, which is underpinned by a theoretical position derived from the design theory exercise. An individual urban design study follows on, such that the whole module effectively delivers an entire urban design process of research, analysis, theoretical positioning, design at different scales, and communication.
Additional Information:Welcome to the Urban Design 1 module.
