Aims

This module aims to develop integrated knowledge of medicines use (including evidence base, national standards, funding arrangements and cost effectiveness) in supporting practitioners to deliver patient-centred care.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Identify and appraise medicines safety issues in a defined area of practice and propose strategies to mitigate these risks
2.
Appraise medicines use in a defined area of practice against relevant national standards
3.
Implement evidence based medicine and best practice in the management of individual patients, whilst highlighting gaps / limitations in the evidence base
4.
Evaluate the challenges associated with delivering personalised care to individual patients
5.
Critically evaluate your competence as a practitioner and develop a proactive approach to keeping knowledge and skills up-to-date

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:• NHS England patient safety alerts • Local and national drivers relating to medicines use • Funding of drugs in NHS o Tariff vs PBR exclusion o Horizon scanning o Specialist funding streams for medicines – e.g. Cancer drug fund o Cost improvement programmes • Delivering personalised care • Introducing new medicines into primary and interface care • Portfolio development and reflective writing
