Aims

The module complements the technical and practical competencies of the other modules on the programme by providing the student with knowledge and understanding of the rules, regulations, standards and responsibilities of practitioners in the delivery of Audio and Video evidence in support of investigations.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Understand the legal issues regulations and standards relating to the acquisition, handling, manipulation and presentation of media for investigation and judicial purposes, and the risks of noncompliance therein.
2.
Evaluate the implications of issues relating to the manipulation and presentation of media
3.
Identify issues and recommend appropriate actions to maintain robust chains of evidence in line with the rules and regulations that govern the processing and handling of multimedia evidence

Outline Syllabus:Organisational structure and culture of law enforcement Law enforcement and justice department procurement Code of Conduct and Regulations Forensic Science Regulator Guidelines for Audio and Video Forensics Biometrics and Surveillance Camera Commissioner Guidelines for Surveillance Cameras Scientific Method and Procedure Standard operating procedures (SOPs) Operating effectively within the Evidence chain Admissibility, authentication, integrity of evidence, chain of custody, metadata Maintaining the chain of evidence throughout investigation Health and Safety standards Outsourcing implications and risks Cognitive Bias risks for Video and Audio Interpretation Cognitive Bias risks for Video and Audio Interpretation Total Quality management ISO Standards such as ISO 17025, ISO 27037, ISO 27001, ISO/IEC 17021-1 Role of the various stakeholders and official bodies, such as (but not limited to): Forensic Science Regulator, Biometrics and Surveillance Camera Commissioner, The National Forensic Framework Next Generation, Scientific Working Group on Digital Evidence, Technical Working Group for the Examination of Digital Evidence, Law Enforcement & Emergency Services Video Association, Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences.
Module Overview:
The module complements the technical and practical competencies of the other modules on the programme by providing the student with knowledge and understanding of the rules, regulations, standards and responsibilities of practitioners in the delivery of Audio and Video evidence in support of investigations.
Additional Information:Audio and Video Forensics relates to the acquisition, analysis, and evaluation of media materials that may ultimately be presented as admissible evidence in a court of law in civil cases or as part of an inquiry into an accident or other incident. Understanding the rules regulations and standards that govern every member of the evidence chain and being able to apply them appropriately is now a core requirement of all involved.
