Aims

Output 1: Urban Design Theory To engage in the comprehensive appraisal and analysis of a number of urban design precedents. Utilising appropriate precedents inform the theoretical basis of an Urban Strategy project in module 7121AR. Output 2: Specialist Study Topic and research methods To select through discussion and seminars an appropriate subject for detailed exploration in the Specialist Study module 7112AR. To establish an appropriate research methodology and literature review as part of the background scoping for the Specialist Study. Output 3: Fine Art Influence and application in Architecture To explore through lectures and seminars issues relating to the influence and integration of fine art theories and practices upon architectural concepts.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Present a clear, well structured, illustrated and fully referenced essay which demonstrates an understanding of various theoretical positions in urban design. (GC4.1).

Communicate a knowledge of urban design precedents and critically evaluate them through use of diagrams, images and written documentation. (GC4.2).
3.
Propose and define through a referenced presentation the scope of an area of architectural study which will go onto form the basis of a specialist study. (GC2.1 / 2.2).
4.
Produce a written document which demonstrates an understanding of the conventions of academic writing with the correct use of references, bibliographies and appendices.
5.
Demonstrate an understanding of the influence of the histories, theories and technologies of the arts upon architecture, through a referenced presentation. (GC3.1 / 3.2).

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Output 1: Urban Design Theory A series of lectures and seminars exploring issues affecting the form of cities and the design of urban environments. The lectures will cover contemporary examples and precedents, exploring best practice and approaches to Urban Design. Output 2: Specialist Study Proposal & Research proposals The opportunity for identification of a focussed topic within the field of architecture and urban design together with production of a literature review and identification of an appropriate methodology for primary and secondary research. Output 3: Fine Art influence and application in architecture A series of lectures examining the principle art movements of the twentieth century illustrating how these have impacted upon the theory, history and technology of architectural thought.
Module Overview:
You will engage in the comprehensive appraisal and analysis of a number of urban design precedents, via a series of lectures and seminars exploring issues affecting the form of cities and the design of urban environments.
Additional Information:Welcome to the History and Theory module, this course will explore critical methods in Urban Design, and the connections of Art and Architecture. You will also have the opportunity to define the research question and methods for your subsequent specialist study.
