Aims
Output 1: Fine Art Influences on Design
Explore through lectures and seminars issues relating to the influence and integration of fine art theories and practices upon architectural concepts.
Output 2: Specialist Study Proposal and Research Methods
To select through discussion and seminars an appropriate subject for detailed exploration in the Specialist Study, module 7121MAS.
To establish an appropriate research methodology and literature review as part of the background scoping for the Specialist Study.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Define a critical theoretical hypothesis that will be researched and tested through the subsequent Specialist Study.
2.
Communicate effectively with appropriate academic writing conventions including the correct use of references, bibliographies and appendices.
3.
Critically reflect upon the influence of the histories, theories and technologies of the arts upon architecture, through a referenced presentation.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Output 1: Fine Art Influences on Design
A series of lectures examining the principle art movements of the twentieth century illustrating how these have impacted upon the theory, history and technology of architectural thought.
Output 2: Specialist Study Proposal and Research Methods
The opportunity for identification of a focussed topic within the field of architecture and urban design together with the production of a literature review and identification of an appropriate methodology for primary and secondary research.

This module will explore critical methods in Architectural and Urban Design and the connections of Art and Architecture. You will have the opportunity to define a research question and develop an understanding of different research methods appropriate for your subsequent specialist study.
