Aims
To introduce the advanced study of literature, focusing on the significance of geographical context on the production and reception of texts.
To develop students’ knowledge of, and confidence in using, advanced theory pertaining to place in literature and the humanities.
To develop high-level communication skills, including online discussion boards and essay-writing.
Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate an advanced understanding of a multiple and complex range of places represented in literary and cultural texts;

Demonstrate the ability to employ critical and theoretical approaches from a range of disciplines to explore how debates about place have been central to modern thought;

Evidence a sophisticated grasp of current critical and theoretical debates around the contested idea of place in the contemporary world.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:
This module will enable students to explore the significance of place in literary and cultural texts of the modern period. In recent years, ideas of place have been widely contested within a range of disciplines and fields of critical enquiry. The module will draw upon this dynamic field to examine the way in which place has been articulated and re-examined across diverse forms and genres, including novels, creative non-fiction, poetry, new nature writing, and visual culture.

Students will be introduced to advanced aesthetic, theoretical, and conceptual approaches to the study of a range of permutations of place. These may include: homes,housing and the country house; the country and the city; urban, suburban, and peri-urbanplaces; the landscape of the everyday; littoral landscapes; the relations of the local, nationaland the global.
