Aims
To provide a critical knowledge base of the philosophy and underpinning assumptions of research for social work and prepare the student to carry out research
Learning Outcomes

Critically discuss the key paradigms in social work research.
2.
Critically review available sources of literature to develop appropriate research questions and research proposal
3.
Critically apply research methodologies and methods to carry out research consistent with values of social justice and anti-oppressive practice
4.
Critically analyse the ethical dimensions of research.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:1. Overview of research and debate in social work in relation to the nature and role of evaluation and research methods.
2. Review of a range of methodologies and research methods and case studies of research related to social work, including practitioner research.
3. The problems and dilemmas of data collection and data analysis.
4. Ethical issues and social work values in research: moral and social theory;
5. Designing a research proposal for a Master's level dissertation module: empirical and theoretical issues.
Module Overview:
This module provides a critical knowledge base of the philosophy and underpinning assumptions of research for social work and prepares you to carry out research. It aims to develop and assess your knowledge of methodologies and research methods, and understanding and transferable skills in the independent investigation, research, communication and evaluation of issues related to effective and ethical professional practice and policy.

Additional Information:This module aims to develop and assess the knowledge of methodologies and research methods, and understanding and transferable skills in the independent investigation, research, communication and evaluation of issues related to effective and ethical professional practice and policy. The module will provide feedback for students in relation to the development of the research proposal, this preparing them for the dissertation module.
This module is mapped to the Knowledge and Skills Statements (child and family social work and social workers in adult services)
