Aims
To support MA students in their undertaking of a research project in an area accommodated within the discipline of English Studies, culminating in a dissertation of 15,000 words or an outcome of equivalent size.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Demonstrate the ability to undertake a sustained piece of research on a topic of their choice;
2.
Conduct an analysis of relevant primary material which is informed by a body of critical and theoretical work appropriate to the field of study;
3.
Show an awareness of current critical and theoretical debates related to their chosen topic.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Students will meet with their supervisor to discuss the dimensions of the project, identify and address key scholarship in the field, develop an appropriate methodology and establish an agreed framework for progress. This module assesses the ability to present, in scholarly form, a sustained piece of research which demonstrates knowledge and understanding of a relevant field, methodologies and critical context, organizes material into a clear and relevant argument, and shows the ability to work independently. The module will be structured by a series of formative assessments before the final dissertation assessment point. These will include a proposal, bibliography and draft chapters, considered and discussed with the designated supervisor.
