Module Content
Outline Syllabus:This module will explore Liverpool’s history through its involvement in the Atlantic slave economy. Liverpool’s involvement in the transportation of enslaved people to the Americas and the trade in goods produced by enslaved people transformed the city from a minor port, to the centre of the Atlantic World. In this module students will have the opportunity to research the legacies of slavery through the links that LJMU had to the slave economy. Through a research project, set by students themselves, students will discover the extent that slavery reached into the heart of institutions, and transformed the way that institutions function today. Through links to merchants, businesses that traded in goods produced by enslaved people, and even abolitionists, students will discover that even LJMU has extensive links that are not too difficult to unearth.
Additional Information:This course is linked to LJMU’s involvement in the Universities Studying Slavery programme, based at the University of Virginia, and will involve students in a trans-Atlantic dialogue on how institutions, such as LJMU, deal with difficult pasts.
This module contains some off-site delivery of teaching. Students will be advised of date and location of these visits and will be expected to make arrangements where practicable. Individual circumstances will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis in order to ensure that module outcomes can be met.
