Aims

The module aims to equip students with the research skills necessary to conduct and critically evaluate health psychology research, including the mini systematic review and synthesis of research literature. A secondary aim is to develop students’ knowledge of the variety and limitations of methodologies used in health psychology, and of the ethical, policy and professional issues related to research and practice in health service contexts.

Critically evaluate a range of research design methodologies relevant to health psychology and their implications for measurement, statistical analysis and interpretation

Summarise and, where relevant, apply ethical, legal, policy, and professional issues related to health psychology research and practice.

Conduct a systematic review of the research literature in accordance with PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses) and COREQ (Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research) guidelines
4.
Engage in critical reflection on personal research abilities and identify areas for development.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
• Philosophical assumptions and measurement issues of a variety of research methods and designs. • Ethical, legal and professional standards for health psychology research and practice. • Systematic reviews, including synthesis of both quantitative and qualitative research. • Measurement issues in health psychology research, including psychometric issues such as scale development, questionnaire design, sampling, reliability and validity. • How to search and critique the research literature. • Communication skills for health psychologists, including presentation and interviewing skills.

This module aims to equip you with the research skills necessary to conduct and critically evaluate health psychology research, including the (mini) systematic review and synthesis of research literature. A secondary aim is to develop your knowledge of the variety and limitations of methodologies used in health psychology, and of the ethical, policy and professional issues related to research and practice in health service contexts.
Additional Information:
The module aims to equip students with the research skills and knowledge of methodology necessary to conduct health psychology research. The content has been designed to dovetail with material covered by other modules on the MSc programme. As the MSc programme forms Stage 1 of training in health psychology, as accredited by the British Psychology Society, students will be encouraged and enabled to reflect on their professional development as health psychologists. The module and its assessments (particularly the systematic review) have been designed in accordance with the BPS’s Standards for Masters Programmes in Health Psychology, 2019.
