Aims

This module provides students with the opportunity to gain practical 'hands on' experience of empirical research in relation to a question of their own choosing. Students should gain a deeper understanding of the conceptual, methodological and logistical problems that may be encountered when conducting research.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Formulate a research plan that is realistic in terms of the time and effort required for the various stages of the research and provides an indication of the objectives and outcomes of the study
2.
Select and apply a methodology that is appropriate for the research question and analyse data within the accepted parameters and conventions of that methodology
3.
Disseminate research findings via a presentation and a thesis of up to 6,500 words that pays due regard to the conventions of peer reviewed psychological research and demonstrating specialist psychological knowledge
4.
Demonstrate reflective awareness of personal research abilities and identify potential areas for consolidation, improvement and development

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
This module is primarily undertaken by the student in the form of fieldwork, data analysis and project write up. However, students are encouraged to maintain regular contact with their supervisor (approximately 25 hours one-to-one supervision are available). Ideally students are encouraged to see their supervisor fortnightly. Students are also required to maintain a reflective log in order to enable them to produce a reflective report at the end of the project.
Module Overview:
The aim of this module is to provide you with the opportunity to gain practical 'hands on' experience of empirical research in relation to a question of your own choosing. It allows you to gain a deeper understanding of the conceptual, methodological and logistical problems that may be encountered when conducting research.
Additional Information:
As the MSc programme forms Stage 1 of training in health psychology and is accredited by the British Psychology Society, students will be encouraged and enabled to reflect on their professional development as health psychologists. The module and its assessments have been designed in accordance with the BPS, Standards for the accreditation of Masters & Doctoral programmes in health psychology January 2019. The aim of this module is to provide students with the opportunity to design and conduct a significant piece of research in the field of Health Psychology. A major aspect of the development of any research project is to structure research ideas within an acceptable framework that may be subjected to peer review. After formulation of initial research ideas, students are encouraged to discuss these with their supervisor and to agree a plan of action before the research commences. This may also involve seeking ethical approval, not only from LJMU, but also from any relevant outside body. Students will have had the opportunity to engage in reflection via the research methods module (7102HEAPSY) and they will be required to continue this process during the project module.
