Aims

  1. To give students an insight into current advanced directions in the field and methods of English Studies suitable for post-graduate study
  2. To develop students’ familiarity with resources necessary for postgraduate research – archives, digital search techniques, academic media and networks, and other forums for academic discussion
  3. To help students gain confidence as a researcher in preparation for their dissertation in the following semester
  4. To teach core skills of postgraduate level scholarship: selection and evaluation of sources, summary and evaluation of critical and theoretical work, articulation of a critical position, and appropriate forms of written and verbal presentation.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Identify and access appropriate archives and bibliographical resources; 

2.
Demonstrate an understanding of methodologies, theoretical approaches and critical debates relevant to their own research interests;
3.
Show an awareness of the scope, shape and demands of a dissertation-length research project
4.
Discuss advanced level research in the discipline, and present written work to a postgraduate-level standard

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
Sessions on using archives, journals & digital resources; new and current methodologies in English studies; academic writing & proposal design.

 
Module Overview:
This module introduces and develops research skills for students in English Studies. It is intended to guide them as they undertake postgraduate level study, helping them to develop high-level skills in recognising and evaluating research methods and reflecting on and developing their own research and academic writing skills. The module will also give you the opportunity to see yourself as part of a community of postgraduate researchers, and present your ideas to peers accordingly.
