Aims
To introduce students to the key features of the United Nations Collective Security System.
To enable students to understand and critically evaluate the effectiveness of the United Nations as an actor capable of contributing to international security and global justice.
To enable students to understand and critically evaluate the various factors which impinge upon the collective security function fulfilled by the United Nations.
The module seeks to introduce students to the work of the United Nations in the maintenance and restoration of international peace and security.
Upon completion of the module, students will have an understanding of the legal framework which governs the work of the UN in this area, and be aware of the influence of political factors upon the operation of this framework.
Learning Outcomes

Show critical and theoretically-informed awareness of relevant provisions of the UN Charter, so far as they regulate its activities in the field of international peace and security and relations with other organisations.

Demonstrate a critical awareness of areas of controversy and current debates concerning the role of the United Nations in peace and security issues.
3.
Demonstrate a critical awareness of the various factors - legal, political, sociological and economic - that impact upon the United Nations' performance of its collective security functions.

Additional Information:The role played by the United Nations in the maintenance of international peace and security is both an interesting and controversial issue. In light of much recent international conflict, this module is very topical and is likely to evolve constantly with changes in the international political climate. The approach adopted will be inter-disciplinary, considering the legal, political, sociological and economic factors which impact upon the work of the UN. Several case studies will be used to assess the role of the UN in the maintenance of international peace and security, and in delivering global justice, allowing formative feedback to be given to students.
