Aims

To demonstrate an ability to integrate ethical research methodology with contemporary person-centred-experiential practice through a thoughtful and sensitive case study of your therapeutic work with one particular client. Students are required to pass this module before progressing onto the dissertation module.

Learning Outcomes

Evidence and critique their capacity for culturally sensitive, anti-oppressive, reflective practice with a specific client
2.
Critically evaluate their own professional competency as an ethical person-centred-experiential therapist in training.
3.
Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the role of a counsellor in an agency context; critically reflecting on role boundaries, contracting and communication issues (in relation to the client and in relation to agency staff).

Evidence both an understanding of, and constructive use of supervision
5.
Evidence your understanding of research methodologies, by demonstrating how your emergent counselling practice is informed by contemporary counselling and psychotherapy research

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
• The nature and history of quantitative and qualitative research in to counselling and psychotherapy • Contemporary qualitative and quantitative research methodology • Outcome research • Process research • Ethical guidelines for psychotherapy and counselling research • The role of supervision • The place of case studies in demonstrating professional competency
Module Overview:
This module aims to synthesize ethical research methodology with contemporary person-centered-experiential practice and develop your knowledge of case-study research methodology, which can be applied to developing practice and individual practitioner research. It enables you to draw on your own supervised practice with clients and use recording of sessions to reflect on and evaluate your own progress.

Important information: You must pass this module to progress to the dissertation stage of the programme.
Additional Information:
Students will be expected to draw on their own supervised practice with clients and use audio recordings of their client work to reflect on, and evaluate their own progress. The use of case studies and recordings as a form of action-research, developed by person-centred-experiential practitioners will be highlighted. This module will be assessed over two academic years to enable students to complete the competency element of the module.
