Aims
1. To introduce and practice creative, formal, research and technical skills appropriate to Screenwriting at Masters level.
2. To gain an understanding of the adaptation process.
3. To identify and develop an original and creative voice.
4. To emphasize the importance of presenting work to professional standards. and working in a professional manner.
5. To initiate a comprehensive understanding of theoretical screenwriting. techniques that enriches and advances their creative work.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Understand the processes involved in adapting material for the screen showing skills appropriate to professional practice.
2.
Produce an original screenplay that shows an awareness of relevant screenwriting techniques specific to the medium.
3.
Evaluate ideas, critically assess quality and accuracy and provide concise constructive feedback on peers’ work demonstrating sound editorial judgment and sensitivity.
4.
Demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively, present and develop ideas in an environment similar to that of a professional writers’ room.
5.
Illustrate an enhanced understanding of the writing process and some of the theoretical elements that make an effective screenplay.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:1. Introduction to narrative structure including inciting incident, climax and resolution.
2. Introduction to writers' workshops and working collaboratively in a writer’s room environment.
3. Creative thinking: generating and developing ideas using techniques specific to screenwriting.
4. Introduction to adaptation using set texts to explore the process involved in writing for different medium.
5. Introduction to key elements of screenwriting including character, dialogue & setting.
6. Write two short scripts using skills appropriate to professional practice.
7. Write a reflective commentary to enhance awareness of the creative process.

We emphasise the importance of presenting work to professional standards and working in a professional manner within a writers' room environment. You will initiate a comprehensive understanding of theoretical screenwriting techniques that enriches and advances your creative work.
