Aims

1. To research and develop an original documentary project, the practical delivery of which will form the culmination of the student's degree experience in the following (summer) semester.

2. To successfully develop and deliver a professional pitch of this original idea, including a practical distribution strategy.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Display creative approaches and innovation in developing a documentary idea to an advanced level, as a practical project on a media platform of choice.
2.
Critically evaluate and analyse all aspects of production research for a masters level documentary project, including research methods and ethical practice
3.
Understand how to conduct a successful professional pitch of their final idea, including an evaluation of the identified consumer and audience profile and strategies for funding, marketing and distribution.within the context of professional contexts

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
The emphasis of this module is further developing research skills to produce original and in-depth material for a chosen subject area. Students will have identified a documentary idea they wish to develop as their final masters documentary in semester one and will further research and develop this documentary idea to produce a comprehensive written treatment and associated production materials.This will include an understanding and application of academic and production research methods and ethical practice within documentary-making and how to direct projects based on the consumer and audience profile.In addition, they will deliver a professional pitch of their research proposal to tutor staff and industry practitioners.  
Module Overview:
Working to a story brief negotiated with module tutors in semester one, this module is designed to equip students with the advanced research skills including an understanding of ethical considerations, with support, in order to deliver their final masters project, on a media platform of choice. 
Additional Information:
Students will also gain an in-depth understanding of the independent documentary sector so they can realistically evaluate their documentary project idea and themselves as creative practitioners in relation to professional contexts, including how to direct projects based on consumer and audience profile.
