Aims

To critically evaluate current counselling and psychotherapy practice as an ethical professional enterprise

Learning Outcomes

Master ethical principles relevant to contemporary culturally sensitive counselling and psychotherapy practice
2.
Critically evaluate the role and nature of supervision for trainee counsellors on placement on the course in relation to counselling and psychotherapy's ethical framework(s) (BACP, NCS etc).
3.
Synthesise their own approach to ethical professional practice.
4.
Reflect on the role of a counsellor in a multi-professional setting, including issues of boundaries, communication, confidentiality, and contracting

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:• BACP Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions • Counselling and psychotherapy as an ethical profession (including Intersectionality and awareness of Memorandum of Understanding) • A model framework for ethical decision making. • The concept and limitations of confidentiality as currently operational in counselling and psychotherapy practice (including GDPR) • The legal parameters of the profession of counselling and psychotherapy in statutory and voluntary settings • Placement preparation and use of supervision • The role of a counsellor in a multi-professional team and related inter-professional issues
Module Overview:
This module aims to critically evaluate current counselling and psychotherapy practice as an ethical professional enterprise. It prepares you for placement practice by emphasising the professional and ethical issues that may be encountered and must be considered.
Additional Information:This module aims to prepare students for their placement practice by emphasizing the professional and ethical issues that may be encountered and must be considered. The BACP Ethical framework will be examined as the professional standards to which they are expected to adhere. There will be information on how to negotiate a placement, and preparing to work with a supervisor. In conjunction with the theory and development modules there will be an emphasis on reflective and culturally competent practice
