2. To understand and critically analyse and reflect upon the legal and ethical considerations involved in documentary making.
3. To demonstrate the production research and narrative skills involved in originating and developing a documentary idea

Critically analyse and evaluate storytelling and narrative as applied to different documentary genres to an advanced level

Understand and synthesise research concerning the legal and ethical aspects underpinning documentary production.

Generate a documentary idea, with a view to developing this as an engaging and original narrative on a media platform of choice.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:
Students will critically evaluate documentaries of varying genres and develop an appreciation of storytelling and narrative as well as the core theoretical issues/discourse of documentary, including through the completion of a practical storytelling and editing exercise. Specialised lectures will examine core journalism aspects of media law and ethical issues and practices within the context of documentary filmmaking. Students will further their knowledge of the research and development process and apply this to their own pre-production research. This will include an understanding and application of academic and production research methods and ethical practice within documentary-making and how to direct projects based on the consumer and audience profile.
