Aims
To provide students with an understanding of sustainable design principles and objectives, and why they matter.
To explore a range of contemporary best-practice case studies of sustainable urban design in an international context.
To provide students with an understanding of a range of evaluative tools that support the conceptual and critical evaluation of sustainable urban design.
To apply the principles learned in project work to explore urban design sustainability benchmarks and audit methodologies.
To utilise these tools to enable students to understand and evaluate the environmental impact and ecology of urban design proposals.
To enable students to reflectively develop urban design proposals in ways that enhances their environmental sustainability.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Integrate knowledge of sustainable design principles in the design and analysis of urban projects.
2.
Utilise specialist knowledge and skills to evaluate the sustainable practice of urban design.
3.
Synthesise the acquired knowledge and skills in associated design project work.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Lectures will explore the subject area in terms of the overarching imperatives that drive the need for more sustainable design and the significance of environmental design approaches, examples of best practice across an international context, and sustainable evaluation methods for urban design projects. Seminars will demonstrate the application of these practical evaluative methods and procedures. Tutorials and seminars in the form of design reviews will facilitate the honing of appropriate skills and abilities that will enable students to complete the associated project work, utilising the BREEAM Communities assessment method or similar evaluation tools.
Module Overview:

This module provides students with an understanding of sustainable design principles and objectives, and why they matter. You will explore a range of contemporary best-practice case studies of sustainable urban design in an international context.
Additional Information:Welcome to the Sustainable Urban Design module. The module commences with a series of lectures that explore sustainable design principles and objectives (and why they matter), examples of best practice in urban design sustainability across an international context, and evaluation methods for analysing the environmental sustainability of urban design projects. Students will then utilise this understanding and skills to evaluate the environmental sustainability of an urban design proposal, and then reflect on ways in which the degree of environmental sustainability can be enhanced.
