Aims

To allow students to develop the skills required to be involved in real scientific research. To give students the experience of working independently on an original problem. To give students the opportunity to display qualities and skills such as initiative, ingenuity and communication.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Demonstrate experience of planning and carrying out detailed scientific research.
2.
Discuss and critically appraise a selected area of current astrophysical research.
3.
Critically present and communicate the results of an investigation.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Appropriate project areas will be decided in consultation with the tutor and student.
Module Overview:
This module develops the skills required to undertake real scientific research. It enables you to:
  • work independently on an original problem
  • display qualities and skills such as initiative, ingenuity and communication
  • develop and analyse independent research
Additional Information:There will be particular emphasis on developing independent learning skills and IT capability. Online literature searches and evaluation of relevant scientific and popular literature will be key aspects, together with development of written communication skills. Course delivered by distance learning. Please note that the assessment of this module will include a recorded viva examination.
