Aims

1.To provide a critical knowledge base of the philosophical foundations of health and social research.

2.To enable the student to develop expertise in a qualitative and quantitative data analysis.

3.To prepare the student to carry out empirical and literature based research.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Critically analyse how evidenced based practice is informed by the research process within your own specialist field.
2.
Critically analyse purpose and context of research and the basis for selecting appropriate research methodology and designs, including the analysis of the appropriateness of research methods in relation to your own professional area.
3.
Critically analyse the philosophical location of research approaches.
4.
Critically evaluate and reflect upon ethical principles, governance and research.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:•Philosophy of research •The relationship between research and the social, political and economic environment •Positivist and interpretative perspectives in research •Action research •Qualitative methods, data collection & analysis •Quantitative methods, data collection & analysis •The research process: asking research questions, research design, data collection, dissemination •The research process: funding and support, peer review, policy development •Ethics
Module Overview:
This module develops skills and knowledge of the philosophical foundations of qualitative and quantitative health and social research. It:
  • prepares you to carry out empirical and literature-based research
  • develops your skills as a potential producer of research
  • allows you to systematically evaluate research outcomes from a variety of sources
  • enables you to engage in a variety of data analysis techniques
Additional Information:This module encourages students to develop their skills as a potential producer of research, as well as their ability to systematically evaluate research outcomes from a variety of sources. In addition, students will engage in a variety of data analysis techniques. The module is firmly based in a thorough philosophical understanding of the nature of research and its implications in health and social care practice.
