Aims
The aim of this course is to advance the knowledge and skills of the critical care nurse practitioner through a programme that is recognised as meeting the national standards for post qualification critical care nursing education and training as outlined in the National Standards for Critical Care Nursing Education (2012) document.
Learning Outcomes

Apply critical knowledge relating to anatomy, physiology and pharmacology in the critical care setting.

Appraise the legal and ethical frameworks for critical care delivery

Synthesise the process of leading and managing critical care service delivery

Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Anatomy, Physiology and Pathophysiology and related pharmacology and pharmacokinetics of the following systems:
Respiratory, Cardiovascular, Renal, Gastrointestinal, Neurological & Integumentary.
Assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the nursing management of patients with critical illness, including the safe and effective use of technology and related equipment, including interpretation of diagnostic and investigatory results and knowledge of treatment modalities.
Critical analysis of the evidence base that underpins critical care practice, including understanding of the research process and the use of different research methodologies and methods to inform practice change and development. Managing emergency situations.
Communication – barriers and techniques to improve
Leadership theories and team-working - change management quality indicators, audit of practice and service evaluation.
Law and ethics - holistic care delivery, defensible documentation, legal aspects of the role of critical care nurses, relevant acts of parliament, principles of mental capacity and consent. Withdrawal/withholding treatment, end of life care including DNAR, Brain stem death and advanced directives. Knowledge and understanding of ethical dilemmas and professional responsibilities. Manage the care of the critically ill along a pathway, psychosocial care of the patient and family, rehabilitation of the critically ill, management of end of life and bereavement.

LEARNING OUTCOME 5 IS ASSESSED VIA THE PRACTICE ASSESSMENT DOCUMENT.
The module learning outcomes and relevant subject benchmark statements are in line with the QAA framework for higher education qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The module is aligned to the Level 7 descriptors for a Level 7 Higher Education Qualification.
The module is delivered over a non-standard year.
The criteria for admission to the module is that candidates are currently working as a registered professional in a relevant area of practice. Ideally candidates will have studied at degree (level 6), however if this is not the case the applicants skills and professional experience will be discussed to allow the module leader to assess capability to study at level 7.
The final award is a Continuing Professional Development – Advancing the Critical Care Practitioner.
The students have access to the VLE and the University's other range of electronic support such as access to the electronic library facilities. The students also have access to the module leader through phone contact, emails and face to face meetings. A module guide is also provided which guides students to the wider range of support available.
The programme is assessed and run in line with the Academic Framework.
