Aims

This module develops insight and critical understanding of strategic approaches to employee resourcing, talent management, and employee engagement in organisations in a changing business context. Drawing on contemporary theories, models and practices, it explores the relationship between employee and organisational performance and the strategies that support the development of high performance and high involvement work cultures.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Define key concepts of strategic people management and describe how these can be understood in relation to business strategy, organisational structure, and the social, political and economic context of the organisation
2.
Recognise and address the competing business, legislative, ethical and social drivers for equality, diversity, inclusion and belonging, making recommendations for strategy and policy improvements in this area
3.
Critically appraise the theoretical underpinnings of high performance and high involvement work cultures and the factors that impact employee performance

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
Indicative content for the module will include; 
  • Key philosophies underpinning people management
  • Integrating people management policies and business strategy
  • Competitive advantage: the value and development of people
  • The strategic context of talent management
  • High performance and high involvement work systems
  • Employee and organisational performance
  • Health and wellbeing at work
  • The diverse and inclusive workplace
Module Overview:
Learners will critically investigate the developments in ethical leadership and people management and practice in the context of a continuously evolving business context.

Students will critique a wide range of literature which explores the future world of work which will include the advancement in technology, sociodemographic changes, political and economic impact and influences.

Learners will also explore the role of values, behaviours and organisational citizenship and how this can drive business effectiveness and performance.
Additional Information:
For learners who are also part of the Senior Leadership Apprenticeship, the following standards are covered within the module; 

(K11) Approaches to strategic workforce planning, for example, talent management, learning organisations, group work, workforce design, succession planning, diversity and inclusion. (S18) Optimise skills of the workforce, balancing people and technical skills and encouraging continual development. (B1) Work collaboratively enabling empowerment and delegation. (S14) Create an inclusive culture, encouraging diversity and difference and promoting well-being. (S16) Enable an open culture and high-performance working environment and set goals and accountabilities for teams and individuals in their area.
