Aims

To support the development of evidence-based thinking with regard to decision- making for effective nursing To provide a critical knowledge base of the philosophical foundations of health and social research. To enable the student to gain a sound foundation in research design and methodology To prepare the student to carry out empirical and literature based research. To prepare the student to carry out audit or service evaluation

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Critical appraisal of research through the use of established frameworks and tools to inform the evidence base Developing critical thinking skills when applying evidence and making decisions Positivist and interpretative perspectives in research Qualitative methods, data collection & analysis Quantitative methods, data collection & analysis The research process: asking research questions, research design, data collection, dissemination The research process: developing a research question, funding and support, peer review, policy development Action research Involving patients, carers and families in care as co-creators Methodologies such as audits and service evaluations
Module Overview:
During this module you will establish your evidence-based thinking in the context of decision making for effective nursing. It will help you to build a critical knowledge base of the philosophical foundations of health and social research and gain a sound foundation in research design and methodology.

It will prepare you to conduct empirical and literature based research, so you can carry out audit or service evaluation.

After completing the module, you will be able to:
  • Apply methods of inquiry to nursing related issues
  • Review processes for the safe and ethical construction and use of evidence in nursing
  • Critically analyse how evidenced based practice is informed by the research process within your own specialist field
  • Critically analyse the appropriateness of research methods relevant to own professional area

Additional Information:The Academic Assessor will monitor that the student is completing their hours. This includes any practice placement learning and simulated practice learning, in accordance with the students programme plan. Please note that workshop hours as listed in the above contact hours account for simulated theoretical learning, in accordance with NMC standard 3.4
