Aims

The module aims to develop critical knowledge and understanding of the open movement in education in relation to issues such as copyright, privacy and licensing and how this impacts on the development of new learning environments, communities, practices and economies. The module also aims to promote a critical view of the kind of digital literacies that are prioritised or emphasised through the production and dissemination of open educational resources.

Module Overview:
This module lets you be engaged with the open movement and the role of digital technologies and systems in delivering its vision and the literacies it requires from users or learners. They will examine the impact and implications it has on learning and what it means to be ‘literate’ and educated.The module aims to
  • develop critical knowledge and understanding of the open movement in education in relation to issues such as copyright, privacy and licensing and how this impacts on the development of new learning environments, communities, practices and economies
  • promote a critical view of the kind of digital literacies that are prioritised or emphasised through the production and dissemination of open educational resources
Additional Information:Students will engage with the open movement and the role of digital technologies and systems in delivering its vision and the literacies it requires from users or learners. They will examine the impact and implications it has on learning and what it means to be ‘literate’ and educated. This is an online course. Participation and access to its contents and activities will be set by students with some exceptions related to the completion and submissions of assessed work. CPD programme specifications for this module are as follows: 1. The module has taken account of the appropriate levels of the Frameworks for Higher Education Qualifications of UK Degree-Awarding Bodies (FHEQ) and is aligned to level 7 descriptors. This is reflected in the module learning outcomes. 2. The module is delivered through a virtual platform, Canvas, as a purely online provision. It is part-time and will run for 6 consecutive weeks followed by an assessment submission of an artefact or a collection of artefacts that is developed within or as a MOOC (massive open online course). 3. The criteria for admission to the module require that entrants should hold a relevant bachelors degree or equivalent in the social sciences, education or an education-related discipline at 2:2 level or higher. Applicants who do not hold an honours degree in one of the above areas will be considered on their individual merits in relation to the module aims and outcomes. Professional experience, publications, CPD activities and other suitable evidence of accomplishment and aptitude will be taken into consideration. 4. In addition to normal entry requirements, international students will be expected to demonstrate a very good level of English language competence, for example an IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent (minimum of 5.5 in each component) or Pearson 58-64 (Minimum 51 in each component for UKVI purposes). 5. The final award is a Continuing Professional Development – Open Movement - Data Resources and Courses 20 credits at Level 7. 6. The students will have access to Canvas and to the electronic library facilities and support services of the University. The module VLE site reflects contemporary reading lists and links to journal articles and other media tools. The students also have access to the module leader through phone contact, emails, online chats and video calls. A module guide is also provided, which guides students to the wider range of support available. Students will have access to LJMU computing and information resources and applications via its off-campus support gateway (https://offcampusstore.ljmu.ac.uk) and My LJMU portal (https://my.ljmu.ac.uk). 6. The programme is assessed and run in line with the current Academic Framework. 7. Completion of weekly tasks is required throughout the module. Participation in online forums and synchronous chats with the tutor and peers is highly encouraged. All learning materials are made available via LJMU’s e-library or through external sites. 8. The methods for improving the quality and standards of learning are as follows:  -Annual Monitoring Review  -Liaison and feedback from the students  -Reports from the External Examiner  -Programme team ensuring the module reflects the values of the current teaching and learning strategy  -Module leader updating knowledge and skills to ensure these remain current and relevant 10. This is a standalone CPD. A specific external examiner will be identified for the module. 11. As a CPD programme, this module has three intakes per academic year: October, February and June. 12. The code for this CPD is 35606.
