Aims

To prepare students to undertake third trimester ultrasound by developing their clinical expertise, application of theory to practice, and skills of critical reflection and evaluation on practice.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Evidence competent, safe, critically reflective practice with the knowledge, understanding and ability to autonomously undertake, interpret, analyse and report third trimester ultrasound scan and Doppler findings within their scope of practice. Students will have the skills to develop and become capable of managing and independently reporting complex caseloads within their sphere of practice.
2.
Utilise sophisticated communication skills with a wide range of service users and carers, use evidence-based practice and clinical decision-making skills in a range of situations suited to their scope of practice, with the ability to progress to managing complex and uncertain situations
3.
Display a thorough understanding of their scope of practice and critically reflect on how this impacts upon decision making and referral within advanced practice.
4.
Practice third trimester ultrasound safely and competently, remaining responsive to patient and service needs, displaying analytical and problem-solving skills, and critically evaluating evidence and practice.
5.
Critically reflect upon their own knowledge, skills and practice and those of others in order to improve service provision and implement change.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
Physics of sound, refection and transmission of sound, absorption and attenuation, piezoelectric production of sound, ultrasound equipment (transducers for medical, diagnostic equipment), power output, safety and physical aspects of USS and human tissue, ergonomics. A and P and normal USS appearances in third trimester, complications of third trimester and USS appearance, management, decision making and referral, maternal physiological conditions, fetal biometry in third trimester, placental localisation, amniotic fluid assessment and measurement, fetal presentation, umbilical artery doppler, middle cerebral artery doppler, accurate measuring, interpreting , analysing and reporting writing, differential diagnosis, communication of results. Ethics and consent, medico-legal aspects of USS, breaking bad news, clinical practice portfolios, critical reflections on practice, multi-disciplinary team working, Guidelines and policies (RCOG Green top guidelines, NICE).
Module Overview:
This course prepares students for third-trimester ultrasound by enhancing their clinical expertise, theory application, and critical reflection and evaluation skills in practice.
Additional Information:
The clinical component for this module consists of 160 hours of mentored clinical practice. This will be in an appropriate setting with a relevant professional. The assessment of clinical practice will be evidenced by successful achievement of the clinical competencies and the undertaking and recording of 200 third trimester ultrasound examinations. Assessment is the responsibility of the named clinical preceptor; unless competence is demonstrated in practice and the 200 examinations are completed credit will not be released. An ongoing clinical portfolio will evidence critical reflections upon third trimester ultrasound examinations.
