Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Learning Strategy
This module has two fundamental components:
The first is an articulation and examination of the specific crafts involved in musical theatre creation and performance: Crucially it examines range of working principles (‘the Book’ ‘scripting the audience’ , ‘integration’, ‘coherence’, and how these convert into subsidiary and craft-specific working principles for librettist, lyricist, composer, director, choreographer, musical director and performer. As such it also explores the challenges presented and how these crafts are allied to one another in both principle and practice, in order to make significance in performance. All students will take part in a series of lecture/seminar/workshops which focus on these crafts, which run concurrently with the seminars on Critical Perspectives and Repertoire.
The second is an exploration of both creative and interpretive processes through a range of activities initiated through negotiation between student cohort and tutor(s) in practical workshop. As well as fostering individual practice and development of personal craft, the work also explores the collaborative practice crucial to this most complex of forms.
Student will have opportunities to work both independently and with tutor mentoring and the Laboratory will be supported by a weekly open Clinic led by a tutor (usually the Course Leader) in which students bring and share specific challenges, obstacles, and issues regarding their practice. Through this, strategies for exploring or dealing with these issues are set for the coming week’s Laboratory. This Clinic provides a weekly focus for personal and group review and enables the Course leader to set details of curriculum activity in upcoming sessions. It also allows students to draw together different personal experiences and strands of the course of study into a coherent frame for growth and learning.
Students will negotiate the content and form of a short (15-20 minute) presentation appropriate to their respective area of craft showing both individual creativity and the application of practice as a means of testing ideas. Students are encouraged to work collaboratively as appropriate but it is not a requirement. A group feedback session will take place after the completion of all presentations.
Indicative content.
The principles of each craft will be outlined and exemplified both in relation to the study of extant repertoire and in the creation and performance/presentation of set exercises week on week. Further detail will form part of the Module Guide.
