Aims

This module aims to:

- equip learners with a comprehensive understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of policy in education, exploring how it reflects societal, historical, and cultural contexts.

- develop learners' knowledge of leadership in education, fostering a critical understanding of power dynamics, and how these affect leadership roles.

- enhance learners' critical thinking, questioning of assumptions, identification of differing perspectives, and understanding of the links between policy, leadership and educational practice.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
The module will be delivered in 3 sections:
1. The long view: mapping out the history of education policies, discourses, continuities and diffractions.
2. From public administration to new public management. The shifting sands of educational leadership
3. Matching the competing demands of education policy with the authentic experiences of the practitioner
Module Overview:
This module will delve into the complex interplay between leadership in education, policy-making, and education practice. It will provide an in-depth analysis of the theoretical foundations of educational policy, placing it in the wider societal, historical, and cultural contexts. The module will examine how power influences educational systems and outcomes by using case studies for a hands-on understanding.

You will scrutinise leadership roles, their interplay with policies, and how these factors mould educational practice. The module will then apply relevant theoretical concepts to real-world educational contexts, demonstrating students' comprehension of how policy and leadership affect educational practice. Various learning methods, such as discussions, case study evaluations, and practical problem-solving, will be utilised throughout the module.

This approach aims to help you gain a well-rounded understanding of how policy and leadership influence educational practice. This knowledge and skills acquired can be applied to a broad range of educational environments.
