Aims

The module aims to provide students with: A sense of the breadth of issues that concern philosophers of education and the range of views that philosophers of education have taken on these issues. An introduction to important debates and traditions within the philosophy of education as a discipline and how these relate to on-going issues in globalization and social change.

Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate critical understanding of some key debates and traditions within the philosophy of education.

Evaluate the relative usefulness of a variety of philosophical perspectives on a range of contemporary educational issues.
3.
Outline their own critical response to issues in education, globalisation and social change, from a philosophical perspective.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:The module considers the importance of thinking philosophically about education, as well as the range of perspectives and approaches taken by philosophers of education. A case for the on-going importance of engaging with educational philosophy is made and examined with reference to contemporary educational dilemmas and debates. Potential topics can include: - Governance and government - Individuals and communities - Peace and conflict - The environment - Children and childhood - Freedom and equality - Social justice - Art and culture - Home, family, identity
Module Overview:
This module examines the breadth of issues concerning education philosophy and the range of views on these issues. It offers an introduction to important debates and traditions within education philosophy and explores how these relate to on-going issues in globalisation and social change.
Additional Information:Assessment 1: 4,500 word equivalent portfolio. The portfolio will consist of three tasks mapping on the three learning outcomes, designed to assess knowledge and understanding, application and critical evaluation. Tasks are likely to include a variety of verbal, written and other components, with some scope for student negotiation.
