Aims

The module aims to equip students with the research skills necessary to conduct and critically evaluate research in the field of positive psychology. A secondary aim is to develop students’ knowledge of the variety and limitations of methodologies used in positive psychology, and of the ethical issues related to research in positive psychology. Students will be given the opportunity to reflect on the development of their research skills competency throughout the module.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:• Philosophical assumptions and measurement issues of a variety of research methods and designs. • Ethical standards for positive psychology research and practice. • Systematic reviews and meta-analysis. • Measurement issues in positive psychology research, including psychometric issues such as scale development, questionnaire design, sampling, reliability and validity. • How to search and critique the research literature.
Module Overview:
This module provides the research skills necessary to conduct and critically evaluate research in the field of positive psychology. It also develops knowledge of the variety and limitations of methodologies used in positive psychology, and the ethical issues related to research in positive psychology.
Additional Information:The portfolio assessment comprises two components – a critique of a research methodology (60%) and a reflective report (40%). The critique assesses learning outcomes 1 and 2, while the reflective report assesses learning outcome 3. Students will be introduced to reflective practice at the beginning of the module and encouraged to keep a reflective journal throughout the semester. They will also be introduced to a range of methodologies and encouraged to engage in critical reflection throughout. The portfolio assessment will then be due in at the end of the semester.
