Aims

The aim of this module is to introduce students to the concept of nursing as an evidence based profession through the lens of public health.

Learning Outcomes

Analyse the characteristics of effective evidence associated with core concepts and practices in nursing
2.
Critique the role of evidence in shaping the development of nursing skills in public health
3.
Critique the different social determinants of health and how they impact population health
4.
Demonstrate an understanding of public health on a local, national and global perspective

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Reflection and reflective models Understanding how to use evidence in practice to promote best practice Understanding how evidence informs patient care Critical thinking to inform evidence based practice decisions Understanding basic research concepts and methods, such as qualitative and quantitative and associated ethical principles. Self awareness, and personal development Literature searching Utilisation of research evaluation frameworks. Introduction to academic writing developing skills of analysis and decision making clinical trials within healthcare health education Sociology Epidemiology, demography, genomics Evidence base for public health Social determinants of health Social inequalities Basic principles of microbiology and infection prevention and control, communicable disease surveillance and antimicrobial stewardship and resistance Key global, national and local level public health policies and priorities Principles of pathogenesis, immunology, immunisation, vaccination and herd immunity
Module Overview:
This module introduces you to the concept of nursing as an evidence based profession through the lens of public health.

After completing the module you will be able to:
  • Analyse the characteristics of effective evidence associated with core concepts and practices in nursing
  • Critique the role of evidence in shaping the development of nursing skills in public health
  • Critique the different social determinants of health and how they impact population health
  • Demonstrate an understanding of public health on a local, national and global perspective
Additional Information:The Academic Assessor will monitor that the student is completing their hours. This includes any practice placement learning and simulated practice learning, in accordance with the students programme plan. Please note that workshop hours as listed in the above contact hours account for simulated theoretical learning, in accordance with NMC standard 3.4
