Nursing and Advanced Practice

To prepare nurses and other health care professionals to manage the care of Cardiac patients.

Outline Syllabus:This course will enable participants to develop their knowledge and skills so that they are able to provide high quality care that is based upon sound clinical judgement and robust evidence 1) The evolution of cardiovascular care and the role of evidence 2) Advanced anatomy and physiology of the heart and circulation 3) Physical assessment of the cardiac patient 4) Haemodynamic assessment and intervention 5) Single and 12 lead ECG interpretation 6) Introduction to biochemistry and haematology 7) Cardiac pharmacology and patient concordance 8) Care of the patient post cardiac intervention 9) Managing patients with Acute and chronic heart failure and the use of device therapy 10) Advanced life support 11) Promoting healthy behaviour change through cardiac rehabilitation and secondary prevention 12) Supporting patients from BAME backgrounds to navigate the healthcare systems 13) Caring for patients who are nearing the end of life and supporting grieving families

Module Overview:
This module will help you to develop your knowledge and skills so that you are able to provide high quality care that is based on sound clinical judgement and robust evidence. It will cover areas including:

• The evolution of cardiovascular care and the role of evidence
• Advanced anatomy and physiology of the heart and circulation
• Physical assessment of the cardiac patient
• Haemodynamic assessment and intervention
• Single and 12 lead ECG interpretation
• Introduction to biochemistry and haematology
• Cardiac pharmacology and patient concordance
• Care of the patient post cardiac intervention
• Managing patients with complex heart failure in the acute setting
• Advanced life support
• Promoting healthy behaviour change through cardiac rehabilitation and secondary prevention
• Supporting patients from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds to navigate the healthcare systems
• Caring for patients who are nearing the end of life and supporting grieving families

Additional Information:This course can be accessed by nurses and allied health care professionals whose primary role is to care for patients with cardiac disease. The module will enhance the students clinical practice by building on their previous knowledge and experience and provide them with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide high quality, evidence based care . Participants will be encouraged to deepen their knowledge on more complex cardiac clinical practice whilst strengthening their skills/ practice towards becoming autonomous in their clinical practice. Evidence of clinical competence will be documented in the practice assessment document, which will be verified by a practice assessor and must be successfully completed before credit can be released. The programme has taken account of the appropriate levels of the Frameworks for Higher Education Qualifications of UK Degree-Awarding Bodies (FHEQ) and is aligned to level 7 descriptors. The module is delivered over one semester. Approved month of intake is September. The criteria for admission to the module is that candidates are currently working as a registered professional in a relevant area of practice. Ideally candidates will have studied at degree (level 6) however if this is not the case the applicants skills and professional experience will be discussed to allow the module leader to assess capability to study at level 7. The final award is a Continuing Professional Development – Cardiac Care Adult The students have access to a VLE and the University's other range of electronic support such as access to the electronic library facilities. The students also have access to the module leader through phone contact, emails and face to face meetings. A module guide is also provided which guides students to the wider range of support available. The programme is assessed and run in line with the Academic Framework https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/about-us/public-information/academic-quality-and-regulations/academic-framework In addition the Core Curriculum for the Continuing Professional Development of Nurses Working in Cardiovascular Settings, Developed by the Education Committee of the Association on Cardiovascular Nursing and Allied Professions (ACNAP) on behalf of the European Society of Cardiology. The methods for improving the quality and standards of learning are as follows: • Continuous monitoring enhancement • Feedback from the students and Boards of Study • Reports from External Examiner • Ensuring the module reflects the values of the current teaching and learning strategy This is a stand-alone CPD and offered as an option on MSc Advanced Health Care Practice Clinical and Critical Care routes An appropriately qualified external examiner has been selected to support this module. Variances approved as follows: 7002CCMA Cardiac care – Adult has a multiple choice exam and students will need to achieve a minimum mark of 80% to pass this component of the module. 7002CCMA Cardiac care – Adult also has a practice competency element which must be satisfied prior to the release of credit for the module Programme code 36501 Module written 2021.
