Aims
1. Acquire an understanding of research methodologies applicable to the design of practice as research in performance.
2. Enhance ability to articulate, orally and in writing, concepts integral to performance theory and practice.
3. Produce a proposal that applies appropriate methodologies to the formulation of a practice-as-research project in the field of musical theatre.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Learning Strategy
[SHARED] A short series of introductory lectures covers the base of research methodologies and resources available, focused on the point of view of the creative popular theatre/performance artist, and will explore the usefulness of different research methods in analysing and developing our understanding of popular theatres/performance in general.
[COURSE SPECIFIC] Subsequently, students will go on to develop an individual proposal for research that is both genre and discipline specific related to their personal practice, demonstrating their understanding and ability to use appropriate research methods in structuring their work. This may be related to the later Dissertation and Project module, but is not a requirement. This will be delivered through group seminar/workshops and individual tutorial.

The proposal is intended as a first step towards the Dissertation and Project Module which runs throughout the year. It enables you to:
- acquire and apply a developed understanding of research methodologies and connected methods in designing practice
- explore and examine the principles of testing ideas through practice in a workshop setting
- create a proposal for a personal research project aiming to test theoretical construct or working process in creative practice
Additional Information:This module introduces students to research methodologies for the study of all kinds of theatre and performance at Masters level. It engages students on this MA not only with a range of tutors but with students on other MA courses, fostering a postgraduate community. While the proposed idea is likely to evolve and may change over the course of Semester Two, the development of a practice-as-research proposal is the first stage in the conception of the thesis project.
Further note on assessment: The determination of the modes of assessment (written or presentation) will be made by tutors on an annual basis in relation to the balance of overall modes of assessment and learning activity across the Programme to give students the best option to achieve broader Programme Learning Outcomes in a balance of assessment modes across the year.
