Aims

To introduce the students to a range of values, attitudes and skills that underpin safe and effective clinical practice To provide nursing students with an overview of human body systems that inform skills for nursing practice. To develop an overview of psychosocial concepts in relation to well-being, disease and illness

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Legal aspects of nursing Social and health legislation Understanding the principles of safeguarding Professionalism and the code Principles of courage, transparency and candour Recognising adverse situations and reporting processes Human factors and error reporting Understanding spirituality and diversity Understand non-discriminatory, person centred and sensitive care Empowering individuals, families and groups towards healthy lifestyles and self-care Record keeping and documentation through care planning Principles and foundations of communication Dietetics hygiene preventative medicine Core skills (mandatory) Manual handling (mandatory) Managing violence and aggression, de-escalation (mandatory) Nature and ethics of the profession General principles of health and nursing Nursing principles of general and specialist medicine Nursing principles of general and specialist surgery Nursing principles of child care and paediatrics Nursing principles of mental health and psychiatry Nursing principles of care of the old and geriatrics Home nursing Anatomy and physiology Pathology Bacteriology, virology and parasitology Pharmacology and Principles of administration Psychology- developmental and abnormal Introduction to common illnesses from childhood to end of end of life. Terms and concepts relating to human structure and function. Introduction to Pain Biopsychosocial factors influencing development across the lifespan, health and illness: psychopharmacology Introduction to side effects of Medication, polypharmacy, fluid input output, NEWS/PEWS, device safety, BLS (mandatory), A-E assessment, Capacity and consent and the mental capacity act Reasonable adjustments/law and equality law Suicide and self harm Psychological and psychosocial factors in acute and long-term illness, across the lifespan, and during pregnancy and childbirth Child & adolescent mental health
Module Overview:
In this module, we will introduce you to a range of values, attitudes and skills that underpin safe and effective clinical practice. You will also explore an overview of the human body systems that inform skills for nursing practice and develop an overview of psychosocial concepts in relation to well-being, disease and illness.

Once you have completed the module, you will be able to participate in guided care to achieve the proficiencies with associated NMC Professional Values (progression point 1) and demonstrate knowledge and skills relevant to medicines management.
Additional Information:The Academic Assessor will monitor that the student is completing their hours. This includes any practice placement learning and simulated practice learning, in accordance with the students programme plan. Please note that workshop hours as listed in the above contact hours account for simulated theoretical learning, in accordance with NMC standard 3.4
