Aims
The aims of this module are to:
1. Provide the student with the opportunity to formulate, test and critique a sustained and substantial period of practice-based research.
2. Provide a vehicle to select and utilise appropriate research and academic skills throughout their line of enquiry.
3. Provide a platform for the students to produce a piece of performance work (solo or in groups) which validates the outcome of their research.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:The module is in three parts:
1. Defining the problem and developing research strategies
At the beginning of level 6 students will, in concert with their project supervisor, develop an individual research proposal. The supervisor will ensure that the proposal is realistic and achievable within the timeframe available. Where appropriate and practical individual research groups may be created with the membership of several students.
2. Creating the Performance
A key element of the performance research project is its practical manifestation through performance. The performance element may serve one of two purposes. Firstly, the project may act as part of the primary research activity, or alternatively the performance may act as a vehicle through which the outcome of the research is illustrated. The role of the performance should be detailed in the research proposal.
3. Evaluating the Outcome
For the conclusion of the project students are required to write a summary document which details the actual research activities undertaken, chart how/why the re-search developed and, comment on aspects of reorganisation/redesign because of findings/problems encountered. Critical and analytical conclusions must be drawn and clearly articulate the position the practical work took within the totality of the project.
The document is expected to comply with the accepted rubric for a line of academic enquiry at this level.
Additional Information:The module enables the student to undertake a sustained and substantial period of prac-tice-based research and develop a substantial performance piece. Assessment is via a research proposal and a practice-based research project.
