Aims

The module will develop the student understanding of the performance venue, considering changing infrastructural needs, architectural innovation and the technological nature of contemporary and future performance spaces. It will also aim to develop an understanding of the emerging roles of theatre consultants, acousticians, architects, control system designers and stage engineers. It will examine the new issues such as automation, network technology, health and safety, ecological and economic factors affecting current entertainments production. In response to the growth of site-specific work, the module will also equip the learner to understand the processes behind transforming a found space for public performance, including the necessary communication systems, infrastructural needs, audience considerations, event planning documents and licensing regulations.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Research, evaluate and audit the operating structures of a range of performance venues, including their box office systems, marketing strategies, FOH organisation, staging technologies and control systems
2.
Distinguish the appropriate infrastructural needs, current standards of good practice and licensing requirements to construct a performance in a found space
3.
Produce an event planning document in support of a client brief to a professional standard
4.
Respond with knowledge, creativity and enthusiasm to create a project design from a client led brief.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:1.How current health & safety legislation and regulations affect performance venues and found spaces 2. How the Climate Change Act influences the building of sustainable theatres 3. The legal responsibilities of the Disability Discrimination act in the context of site specific and existent venues. 4. The transferability of their existing skills into associated work and industries with specific reference to the work of theatre consultants and acousticians 5. Developing the Auditorium and the work of theatre architects 6. Show technology and backstage operations. 7. Marketing strategies 8. The blue light services, Joint Action Groups and Safety Advisory Groups.
