Aims
This module aims to amalgamate practical and research skills in the development of an independent project. It will provide a critical/theoretical framework within which performance, pre/post production and emergent performance technologies are contextualised in a practise-based research project related to an agreed, chosen area of study.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Synthesise independent research skills, formulate original ideas and negotiate an argument according to appropriate performance platforms in the creation of an original work
2.
Practically realise aesthetic, theoretical, socio-cultural, contextual and critical perspectives in emergent recorded performance practice
3.
Synthesise the coordination and management of an interdisciplinary media performance product, handling pre-production, production, post-production techniques within a conceptual framework
4.
Critically evaluate the creation and reception of an original new work, isolating research skills, working methods, technical approaches and concepts in performance
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:In this module you will embark on an independent practice-as-research study, encouraged to demonstrate your ability to work independently and assume responsibility on a personal project over an extended period of time. You will choose a specific discipline, platform and mode of presentation in which you will capture your research. This may include examples such as:
• Integrated live/recorded media performance
• Short film
• Documentary
• Docufiction
• Self-reflexive filmmaking
• Metacinema
• Auteurship
• Structuralism in film
You will demonstrate an awareness of the cultural and historical contexts associated with the project and respond, through practice, to an appropriate research question, be encouraged to create a timetable of work and to take responsibility for arranging meetings with your project supervisor on a regular basis for formative critical responses on the development of the project. This encourages independent learning, organisation and self-reliance. You are assessed on your practical presentation, including the submission of supporting documentation. You will be assisted to explore, examine and analyse a range of critical/theoretical models in a practical context appropriate to the demands of the chosen material. The written discourse will investigate and support your notions and discoveries, relating to the research question and the challenges/solutions encountered in the relation between theory and practice. It will document progress of the project and demonstrate a capacity for critical reflection and analysis in the engagement within the theoretical framework. You will be allocated regular tutorials for consultation with your specialist tutor. This time can be used in a variety of ways during the course of the module with personal tutors providing verbal and written feedback on a work-in-progress logbook, as well as practical support, to aid you to meet your project outcome. Aims and objectives will be set down in the logbook and reviewed at each meeting. You will be reminded about good scholarly practice and bibliographical conventions as well as accessing learning resources. Ongoing formative feedback is embedded in the module and the tutor will be available to give guidance and feedback throughout the preliminary stages of the project.
