Module Content
Outline Syllabus:The focus of the module content will depend on what the IR-related Select Committees are investigating and requesting written submissions. The instructor will assess the written evidence assignment, and then submitted to the Committee. If no such investigation is ongoing at the time of delivery then it will use a previous investigation and be assessed by the instructor but not submitted to the Committee. The module will include a number of external speakers that will help inform the students of Select Committees. It will also include a trip to the Parliament (if provisions are allowed at the time of study) to witness a Committee in action.
Module will typically include the following topics
• What is a Select Committee and where does it sit in the government policy-making process?
• How can the individual engage with the state policy-making apparatus?
• How to write a convincing written evidence
• Understanding the issue, and your positions on it (subject examined will be contingent on what the Committee is investigating
Additional Information:This is a practical module designed to enable students to engage with the state apparatus through submitting written evidence (in a hypothetical condition) to an IR-related Parliament Select Committee. It also educates the students on the state political process, and supports the development of their political positions.
