Aims
The module will examine geographical approaches to the study of health and environment, focusing on the investigation of spatial, ecological and social approaches to human health.
This module considers some of the fundamental concepts needed for a basic understanding of ‘health’ and ‘geography’. It explores the interface between the two and uses examples drawn from local, national and in addition international studies of health experience and disease incidence. Students are encouraged to adapt a critical approach to research evidence. Regular tutorials will provide opportunities for informal formative assessment to support student learning and discuss their overall progress.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Discuss and critically appraise the spatial, social and ecological approaches to the geography of health.
2.
Critically evaluate contemporary developments in health and health care from a geographical perspective.
3.
Evaluate the main factors that impact upon human health and critically analyse the wider determinants of health and health inequalities.
