Aims
This module aims to harness analytical research skills in the development of a written discourse. It will provide a critical/theoretical framework within which performance, production and emergent performance technologies are contextualised in a research project related to an agreed, chosen area of study.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:In this module you will embark on an independent research study, encouraged to demonstrate your ability to work independently and assume responsibly on an academic research-project over an extended period of time. You will choose an area of study and submit your proposal as either a written report or power-point presentation identifying:
• Working title
• Subject of enquiry
• Research areas
• Investigative skills
• Exploration of contemporary/historical works, practitioners, theorists, artists, auteurs, etc
• Critical evaluation
• Indicative hypothesis/argument
• Reading list
You will demonstrate an awareness of the cultural and historical contexts associated with the project and respond to a chosen research question, be encouraged to create a timetable of work and to take responsibility for arranging meetings with your project supervisor on a regular basis for formative critical responses on the development of the research project. This encourages independent learning, organisation and self-reliance. You are assessed on your proposal, its coherence and validity. You will be assisted to explore, examine and analyse a range of critical/theoretical models in a practical context appropriate to the demands of the chosen material. The written discourse will respond to your proposed title, research area and hypothesis, demonstrating a capacity for critical reflection and analysis within a theoretical framework. You will be allocated regular tutorials for consultation with your specialist tutor. This time can be used in a variety of ways during the course of the module with personal tutors providing verbal and written feedback as desired. Aims and objectives will be decided and reviewed at each meeting. You will be reminded about good scholarly practice and bibliographical conventions as well as accessing learning resources.
Ongoing formative feedback is embedded in the module and the tutor will be available to give guidance and feedback throughout the preliminary stages of the project.
