Aims

1. To evaluate different theoretical perspectives on gender, sexuality and the body. 2. To critically analyse normative ideas concerning body image, beauty, gender and sexuality. 3. To explore how the body is regulated in society by laws and social norms, and how these are resisted and challenged.

Learning Outcomes

Critically evaluate a range of theoretical perspectives on gender, sexuality and the body.

Synthesis material from different sources in order to examine a contemporary issue on gender and sexuality.
3.
Critically analyse a particular text, relating it to the overall module themes.
4.
Further develop digital and IT skills.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:An indicative range of topics studied includes: Sexual identities and gender diversity Queer, transgender and feminist theories Body Modification Media, Body Image and the Beauty Myth Gender based violence Sex work debates
Additional Information:The module explores sociological and feminist debates around the body, gender and sexuality. It engages with ideas which challenge the normative representations and ‘taken for granted ideas’ around body shape and image, gender and sexualities. It covers topics such as body modification, beauty, pornography, sex work, trans* identities and violences against the body.
