Aims

To evaluate the academic research process and the differing techniques, strategies and methods used to undertake research in the built environment. To develop a research proposal that can be taken forward to the research project.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Appraise, compare and interpret key theories, concepts and methodological issues related to research in the built environment.
2.
Explain and relate the nature and purpose of each stage in the research process and be able to justify options.
3.
Design and propose a research project on a specific area of study, including ethical consideration.
4.
Evaluate the alternative methods that are available to analyse qualitative and quantitative data.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Developing research questions, aims and objectives. Research design and theoretical approaches - exploration of quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods design and particular philosophical approaches. Research strategies - including case study research, survey research, and observational research. Research methods - data collection methods such as questionnaires, interview and secondary data analysis. Ethical principles in research - how to conduct research ethically and responsibly.
Additional Information:A supervisor will be nominated at the beginning of the module to work individually with each student.
