Aims

This module will explore the uses of genetic techniques in the field of forensic science and anthropology from a theoretical and practical perspective.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Demonstrate a theoretical and practical knowledge of the main techniques involved in forensic and anthropological studies and evaluate their advantages and limitations.
2.
Analyse and interpret DNA data in a forensic context.
3.
Analyse and interpret DNA data to study past populations.
4.
Demonstrate the ability to present DNA analysis results objectively and in an appropriate format.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Genetic markers. DNA typing. DNA extraction. PCR. Electrophoresis. Kinship. DNA identification in forensic casework. DNA databases. DNA matching probabilities. Palaeogenetics. Miscoding lesions. Contamination. DNA approach to study of migrations. DNA approach to study of human variation and evolution.
