Aims

To provide students with an understanding of the history, nature and operation of international law; the actors and bodies involved in the development and enforcement of international law; and to encourage reasoned, critical analysis and debate of contemporary issues within international law, with particular reference to the role of the United Nations in the maintenance of international peace and security.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:History and theory of international law Sources and subjects of international law Statehood and recognition Jurisdiction and Immunity State responsibility The United Nations collective security system Armed conflict: Jus Ad Bellum and the Jus in Bello Introduction to international criminal law.
Module Overview:
This module provides you with an understanding of the history, nature and operation of international law and the actors and bodies involved in the development and enforcement of international law. It encourages reasoned, critical analysis and debate of contemporary issues within international law, with particular reference to the role of the United Nations in the maintenance of international peace and security.
Additional Information:The module is designed to provide a comprehension of contemporary world affairs, and the role played by international law in the resolution of contemporary conflicts and disputes, as well as the challenges faced by international law in the modern geopolitical climate. The module is likely to be of special appeal to those with interests in international affairs, politics or history.
