Aims

This module aims to provide a practical and theoretical exploration of the role and relationship between imagination and drama in educational practice.

Learning Outcomes

Critically reflect on practice that utilizes drama as a teaching methodology.

Appraise the research evidence to support the use of drama as a tool for learning in the early years

Critically evaluate key issues affecting drama in education

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
Students will take part in a practical and theoretical exploration of drama in early years education which will include but will not be limited to the following: • Defining drama • Pioneers of Drama in Education • Research and drama • Drama and imagination • A dramatic toolkit • The dramatic process • Role-play and improvisation • Teacher in role • Mantle of the Expert • Using children’s literature to stimulate drama
Module Overview:
Students will explore ways in which imagination and drama including improvising, devising and work-shopping techniques, can be used as learning and teaching methodology. The emphasis of the module will be on equipping students with the skills to create a positive learning environment conducive to creativity and to critically debate the role of drama in education. Opportunities for group and individual tutorials are embedded in this module.
