Aims

The aim of this module is to provide an opportunity for students to learn more about the theory and methods for facilitating children’s thinking and supporting their philosophical enquiry.

Critique the key theoretical ideas associated with philosophy with children

Critically analyse methods of facilitating children’s thinking and supporting philosophical enquiry

Critically evaluate the use of philosophy with children in the early years to support learning

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Students will look at the theory and ideas for philosophy with children which will include but will not be limited to the following: • Children as creative and critical thinkers • Supporting children’s philosophical enquiry • Young children reasoning, arguing, discussing, debating and collaborating • Developing children’s social interaction an personal development through discussion • Enquiry based approaches to learning in the early years • Children and the ‘big questions’ about reality and existence
Module Overview:
This module provides you with an opportunity to learn more about the theory and methods for facilitating children's thinking and supporting their philosophical enquiry. It allows you to explore philosophy as a discipline for the early years and to investigate the issues in its application.
Additional Information:The module allows students to explore philosophy as a discipline for the early years and to investigate the issues in its application. The presentation (debate) assignment is organised as a group activity but an individual mark will be awarded. Opportunities for group and individual tutorials are embedded in this module.
