Aims
To understand how community based policing methods and activities contribute to the overall impact of policing in communities. This module will enable students to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills to be able to effectively resolve more complex policing issues that communities face. The module will examine in detail how preventative policing, community engagement and partnership working can reduce harm and build trust. Students will review the evidence base in this area and research how to implement and develop practical solutions to provide effective policing methods within communities whilst furthering their own competence within the pathway.
Learning Outcomes

Critique key emerging issues, problems or concerns faced by a range of communities

Critically evaluate the impact of potential challenges to community policing and the future role of community based policing practice
3.
Understand how a preventative policing strategy can impact positively on communities
4.
Compare methods of community engagement and communication and critically assess how they contribute to the understanding of the needs of the community
5.
Examine theories of social capital and collective efficacy and how they contribute to the health of a community
6.
Assess the importance of early intervention within a schools environment in community policing
7.
Critically explore a range of problem-solving approaches that can be applied to reduce community tension and promote community cohesion and understand how these can be applied following major or critical incidents

The function of community policing. Community trauma. How historical events can have an impact on community relationships with the police. The role of the police officer and others. Key aspects of community policing. Anti-social behaviour. Partnership working in a community policing context. Fostering effective relationships. Methodology of effective community policing. Tension indicators and improving trust. Community engagement strategies

Module Overview:
The module is intended to ensure that students have the knowledge understanding and skills to conduct more complex issues, in a Community Policing context.
The module is intended to ensure that students have the knowledge understanding and skills to conduct more complex issues, in a Community Policing context.

Lectures will provide the students with information and theories. Students will then explore the theory in more detail and context through facilitated discussion and exercises. Students will examine issues that effect different communities, and the challenges that policing faces. Students will examine how a preventative policing strategy and partnership problem-solving can impact on communities, and the role that community engagement plays in community policing. Additionally students will explore the role of early intervention in schools policing. Students will engage with community-based organisations enhancing their understanding of collaboration in action and drawing upon their learning about what works in evidence led policing. Students will then write an extended essay to critically analyse aspects of community policing
