Aims
The aim of the module is to bring together two critical areas of research in order to explore and extend research inquiries around relationships and responsibilities that can shape more sustainable futures. Research studies into early childhood education have confirmed the importance of these formative years in the formulation of identity, willingness to learn, as well as engagement with the world. Students will develop their understanding of Education for sustainability considered within 5206ECS and students are encouraged to engage in systematic personal inquiry in order to document their understanding of the terminology from an international perspective.

Critically appraise research in the area of Education for sustainability from an international perspective.

Examine early childhood education and associated curricula from an international perspective.

Demonstrate an ability to reflect and assess from a personal perspective
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:
Students will explore a range of topic content that will include, but not be limited to the following:
Ethics and values; Examining early childhood education through the lens of education for sustainability
The legacy of outdoor early childhood education
Revisioning rights
Historical and socio cultural contexts; Intercultural dialogues
Curriculum and pedagogy; Innovative approaches from an international perspective

This module evaluates the research area of education for sustainability whilst providing students with opportunities to apply a critical analysis of children as active participants and early childhood as a site for democracy, sustainability and social justice. The module builds on the core level 4 module, 4206ECS Pedagogical approaches (Part 2) - Sustainability; Democracy, Participation and Social Justice and the level 5 option module Exploring early years curricula within early childhood studies; pedagogical approaches for sustainability 5206ECS with the inclusion of a global perspective.
